Ha Le School Counselor

I was born in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. Typical of war torn countries, food was scarce and jobs were not available. My family was forced to flee the country on a little fishing boat in search of freedom and a better future. After bouncing around for over a year in various refugee camps, we landed in America. Without skills or language ability, but with determination and hard work, my parents managed to put food on the table and a roof over our heads. During my teens, we moved to San Diego where I attended Wilson Middle School and later graduated from Kearny High School. For my family, going to college was an unwritten expectation so after high school, I attended San Diego State University where I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. I knew when I was very young that I wanted to work in the field of education so after acquiring my Bachelor's degree, it was natural for me to pursue that passion. I was accepted to Cal State Hayward where I earned my Master's Degree in Educational Psychology with a Pupil Personnel Credential allowing me to work as a school counselor. This is my 11th year serving San Diego Unified students and their families as a school counselor. I've worked at various middle schools, SCPA, Scripps Ranch High School, and for the last 3 years, I worked in the Counseling and Guidance Department supporting my fellow school counselors. I am very excited to be the Head Counselor at East Village Middle College High School where I can use my knowledge and experience to provide direct services to students and their families.

My other passion in life is to do missionary work. I've been back to Vietnam on several short term mission trips where I taught English in the city and assisted doctors with medical services to the people in rural regions of Vietnam. I am hoping to go on more of these trips in the future and bringing my 3 young children with me. Nothing will teach compassion and the appreciation for life than to actually experience it. One of my favorite proverbs is "How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver"
